So. Return of the King.

Wonderful movie. They did make cuts, but I honestly didn't miss any of it much, although I do wish they had had Merry and Pippin grow another foot from drinking the Ents' water, because I liked that part of the book. Overall, though, very enjoyable--lots of men crying, lots of men hugging, lots of stuff for slashers to squeal over. The battle scenes were also quite interesting. In some cases, even amusing.

Anyway, there is one thing I would like to mention that brings us to my subject line. I am talking, of course, about the dead bird.

WTF?!

So Frodo is wandering around in Shelob's lair realizing that he is in even more Mortal Peril than usual, what with all the dead bodies hanging about. We, the moviegoers, are fortunate enough to get close-ups of said bodies. The first is either a human or a member of a humanoid race; no problem. The second is the DEAD BIRD. You know, birds don't even make an appearance in these movies except for the CGI eagles, who are consistently alive, and this was clearly not an eagle. So why? WHY the dead bird? Really, it was entirely gratuitous.
