Oh man, I needed that.

So yes, Chicago was awesome!

Tuesday:
-I found my hotel (which was actually quite nice) without getting lost.
-I got to be the first person my friend Caitlyn saw after finding out that she was a newly-minted Ph.D.

Wednesday:
-I got some teeny tiny beer glasses at Crate and Barrel that will be perfect if I ever want to host an American Girl Happy Hour.
-I discovered that, against all odds, [livejournal.com profile] evilhippo is somehow even more awesome in person than on the internet. And even though some might say that the weather was against us, I would actually argue that it was for us, because we never would have made it to Navy Pier in time for fireworks if it weren't for the thunderstorms. Anyway, it's not like we actually got turned away from anywhere just for being soggy. Check out the awesome tumbler (that I'm planning to use as a vase) that I got at the action figure/gay pride store! Why yes, Chicago does have an action figure/gay pride store. Which also has an enormous fluffy dog.

Thursday:
-I used my student ID to get a discount on an all-access pass at the Field Museum, which enabled me to see the animatronic dinosaur exhibit! Woo! Also, a 3D movie about their T-Rex skeleton and an exhibit on mammoths. At the mammoth gift shop, I considered buying a companion for Mammy, but Mammy has gone 23 years without a companion and seems to be doing fine, plus I am cheap.
-I called [livejournal.com profile] clodia_risa from a gorgeous spot under a tree at the park overlooking the harbor, and this group of people totally came up and stood like two inches away from me even though there was a ton of space and lots of trees and shade. Jerks! I got up and found a different gorgeous spot under a tree overlooking the harbor, though, so all was not lost.
-I went to the Art Institute for their free Thursday evenings. My feet were in pretty bad shape by that point (lots of walking on Wednesday and Thursday), so I didn't stay long, but I did get to see some neat stuff, like the Seurat and the Chinese ceramic pillows. I know I've seen Chinese ceramic pillows before, but they seem novel every time, probably because I promptly block the horror of them from my mind.

Friday:
-I decided to stay in my room instead of going to the Taste of Chicago because my feet hurt.
-Which was for the best, because I got kicked out of the city an hour early when it turned out that the hotel's checkout time was 11, and not noon like I had thought.
-Which was for the best, because the thunderstorm I passed through during the last hour of my trip home was so bad that I thought I was going to die. At three separate points, I literally could not see anything other than the taillights of the car in front of me. Wisconsin, seriously, spring for some frigging street lamps.
-Which was for the best, because...wait, no, actually it really sucked. But the timing was also good because while I was sitting in traffic downtown, my friend Christina called me to ask if I wanted to meet for lunch, and I got to say, "Well, you know what, today isn't going to work for me, because at the moment I'm kind of in Chicago."

Oh, and! At Navy Pier, [livejournal.com profile] evilhippo and I saw a seagull swallowing a fish whole. Does anyone know what, exactly, the fish would have died from, and what that would be like? Because we couldn't decide, and Google has been no help whatsoever.
