Well, a challenger has appeared.
Everybody say hello to the KFC Double Down, a bacon and cheese sandwich with a bun made out of two pieces of fried chicken.
I'm not even kidding, you guys, this monstrosity totally derailed my information design class tonight. And now I sit here before you, to ask not what the hell KFC might have been thinking, but a much more important question: which of these would you rather eat?

Recap: the Double Bacon Hamburger Fatty Melt consists of three bacon-stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches and two four-ounce beef patties with bacon and cheese. The Double Down consists of one slice of pepper jack cheese, one slice of Swiss cheese, two strips of bacon, two KFC chicken breast fillets, and "the Colonel's sauce."
I know which one I'd go for. The fact is, I love bacon cheeseburgers. I also love grilled cheese sandwiches, and I don't much care for pepper jack cheese. Also, I don't ever plan on actually eating either one of these, so this is mostly theoretical anyway, and if I ever did reach the point at which I just didn't care what I did to my arteries anymore, I figure I'd just go all out.
But maybe you feel differently. After all, white meat chicken is actually reasonably healthy. Also, where the Double Bacon Hamburger Fatty Melt is, perhaps, one-note and bland, the Double Down contains spicy cheese and a presumably flavorful sauce. But at the same time, aren't sandwiches meant to have actual buns? Aren't enormous sandwiches made with love and care in your own kitchen simply more rewarding than those purchased as a $7 combo meal at a fast-food restaurant in Providence or Omaha? Make your decision, and then vote!
