What I Did This Weekend
Jan. 23rd, 2006 11:56 pmThis weekend, I read Death Note.
From what I'd heard, I expected the story to be great for awhile, and then suddenly get stagnant and boring. Maybe it's just because I read it all at once, but I don't think it's gotten boring at all. There have certainly been places where the mangaka could have taken it in a different direction and wrapped it up, but really, it's fine the way it is too. Well, okay, I am getting kind of impatient with Near's unfailing cautiousness and strategizing. I'm still willing to suspend disbelief.
Even though I'd been expecting for about thirty chapters that the Big Spoiler I knew was coming was going to be L's death, I was surprised at how sad I was when it actually happened. It's been almost forty chapters since then, and I still miss him. I think he may have been my favorite character. He won me over completely when he said that Light was his first friend; I was kind of skeptical initially--about the "friend" part, that is. I have no trouble believing that if L truly did consider Light a friend, that he was his first. But he seemed so sincere, and then again when he declared that Misa was his second friend, that I couldn't help but believe him.
Post-haircut Aizawa is sex. He was adorkable pre-haircut, too, though. I also enjoy his frequent Matsuda smackdowns, even though it's like shooting fish in a barrel, really. I don't know what to think about Matsuda. He's clearly a decent guy, and although his unwillingness to suspect Light is shortsighted, it shows an endearing level of faith. Plus, his crush on Sayu is extremely cute. I love Mogi, not that that's hard to do. Light's dad...you know, ever since Light came under suspicion, I have had nothing but sympathy for his poor father. The man gave up everything, eventually including half of his lifespan, and he died with his son begging him to finish the murder he was about to commit. At least he didn't ever technically use the notebook to kill anybody, and died believing that Light was not Kira, which is the only good that came of it. I did find it interesting that he got the shinigami eyes so shortly before he died, because he didn't appear to have been killed by one of the death notes, implying that his natural lifespan wasn't much longer to begin with. So if he hadn't gotten the eyes, he would have lived long enough to finish writing Mello's name--but then he wouldn't have found out the name in the first place. Yay irony.
I really, really want to make a Death Note/FMA crossover icon. For one thing, Mello is eminently iconable. For another thing, he's totally Greed. I'm sure I'm not the first person to realize this. They have the same styles of dress, decorating, and rebellion, and they both operate from secret hideouts that are eventually destroyed. Of course, Mello goes beyond that, managing to commit at least four or five deadly sins simultaneously, or all seven if you squint. I still like L better, but I definitely see why people like Mello so much.
Near is not as interesting as Mello, but that's okay, because it's mesmerizing to watch him build things. The fact that an action could be mesmerizing even in a non-animated medium is pretty damn awesome.
I really have nothing to say about Misa. Just...I am kind of curious as to whether Light is actually sleeping with her. One could argue either way. The end.
I also finally saw Brokeback Mountain, was not particularly impressed by FMA episode 43, did a bit of homework, and drank some coffee.
...Mostly I just read Death Note. Ahaha. It is 93 chapters long.
