logicbuttonOkay, this kind of thing makes Shigure-in-the-rain cry. See, there he is. And do you know why? Because the author is clearly not an awful writer (especially for the thirteen-year-old she claims to be), and she seems to care about canon, and her characters are actually rather IC, but her original character? Mary Sue Extraordinaire. She's not even as repulsive as your average Mary Sue, but...but...
-she's beautiful
-she's an American exchange student
-her Japanese, both formal and colloquial, is perfect from the start
-she wears snarky t-shirts instead of the school uniform
-Pure Sex is totally enamored of her
-her name is Kassandra with a K, and she goes by Kass
-she finds out about the curse and everyone's fine with that
-she lives at Shigure's house (of course, since in this universe they have no qualms about bandying the curse about, maybe this is just the result of pervy!Shigure, which is IC)
-the Sohmas' world revolves around her
-she takes Uo's place as Kyo's affectionate nemesis (Kyo, meanwhile, is quite in character)
-the author says Kass is basically her
-the story is called "The New Girl"
-and so much more
Please, thirteen-year-old writer! You have so much potential, and your obvious Mary Sue doesn't even make my eyes bleed, but you have applied liberal amounts of cliche that I just can't overlook. It occurred to me early on that this could be intentional, but the fic is too good for that.
Pray for the future of the Fruits Basket fandom. I can only hope that one day, authors like this will ditch or fix their Sues or replace them with canon characters. Shigure-in-the-rain hopes so too.
