And now, a rant.
Jun. 30th, 2004 09:11 pmOkay, people, let's get something straight. Mrs. Figg can NOT see dementors. She was LYING to the Wizengamot. She knew they were in Privet Drive because she heard Harry cast the Patronus charm. She knew they had left because she couldn't feel them. The only reason she told the Wizengamot she could see them was that she was the only witness besides Dudley, and the Wizengamot knew for a fact that Dudley wouldn't have been able to see them. Apparently the exact extent of a Squib's powers is not common knowledge in the wizarding world, and this is why she was able to lie to them. If she had ever seen real dementors, she never would have described them as "big and wearing cloaks," and she never would have used the word "running" to describe their movement. Harry even thinks to himself that she probably had never seen anything more than a picture of a dementor.
Sorry to rant, but I've just seen one too many people use "Mrs. Figg can see dementors" as evidence to support arguments of varying complexity now. If somebody wants to argue against what I said there, I honestly would like very much to hear it.
In other news, today I went to see Spider-Man on a lark. Much fun was had by all, by which I mean me, because I went alone and got a seat in the very back row, smaque-dabbe in the middle. Score! Oh, and the movie was okay, too.*
*This is a gross understatement. The movie was wonderful. Everybody should go see it right now.
