DUAL DESTINIES

Final thoughts!
1. I like Athena a lot!
2. The music is absolutely wonderful. It was composed by Noriyuki Iwadare, who also did Trials and Tribulations and I think AAI (1, not sure about 2), so I wouldn't have expected anything less. I bought the soundtrack when I was in Japan two weeks ago and am happy to have done so!
3. Related: I'm gonna have to make an Adversary playlist on my iPod, because they get all the best music. Case in point: Great Revival; The Fragrance of Dark Coffee; Speak Up, Pup!; and now Distorted Swordsmanship. And, what the heck, LOVE LOVE GUILTY, because even though it's not so much my style it's still pretty cool, plus, Klavier.
4. Are Phoenix and Edgeworth totally doing it or what?
5. Speaking of ships, let's talk about ships! I've looked around AO3 a bit and scattered among the pages and pages of Phoenix/Edgeworth the most common DD-specific pairing I've seen so far has been Athena/Blackquill, which...eh. It's not the worst pairing in the world, I guess, but I see them with more of a sibling dynamic - or uncle and niece, which is pretty close to reality. Their age difference isn't too huge, but it is greater than I'd like, especially with Athena being only 18. Meanwhile, case 5 shot my Athena/Apollo shipping from casual and tentative to OTP territory. Also, as I think I've already made clear, I ship the crap out of Fulbright and Blackquill. However, I haven't settled on the angle I'd prefer to see on their relationship. All I've got for sure is that I want it consensual (leaving aside the real-world concept of prisoners being unable to consent with authority figures) but not fluffy. I think I kinda like the idea of neither of them knowing what the hell they're doing, either, and preferring not to think too hard about it. As for other ships... I ship one-sided Robin/Juniper, Mayor Tenma's abs/Mayor Tenma's shoulders, and Aura/closure.
6. I just realized that there are two different characters in this game named Aura and Ora.
7. Gameplay! All the gameplay problems with the other games in the series have been resolved with this one. LOVE. On the other hand, in some ways that made it seem a little easy? But maybe that's just me being a scrub or an elitist, and maybe it doesn't matter if the game is easier as long as it's good, which it is? Anyway. This game was the most gimmicky of the series so far, what with the cutscenes and all three supernatural abilities plus that brainwave thing (whose official name is either Thought Root or Synaptic Resonance, according to the soundtrack, although suddenly I seem to remember reading somewhere that it might be called Concentration). But as it happens, I love all the abilities and I love the brainwave thing and I love all of the associated music. I also loved the cutscenes despite their terrible voice acting. So, in conclusion, I don't care.
8. This was the first time in all my years of media consumption that I've ever seen such a huge twist coming from so far away, and I didn't enjoy it. I was pretty proud of myself for having my theories w/r/t peaked lapels validated, but in future I would prefer to be surprised by huge reveals like that. This is why I try never to think too hard about where a story is going. At least I still get to brag about it, I guess.
9. As much as I would have liked to have seen Maya, Franziska, Gumshoe, Ema, Larry - a lot of people, really - I'm so glad Pearl and especially Edgeworth made appearances. Not just for cameos, either, but actual roles. That and the overall tone of the game were my two main issues with AJ, and the tone of the earlier games was back too.
10. I love Ace Attorney. Despite all the interface updates and gimmicks and new voices, this game was very, very much Ace Attorney. Tone, characters, dialogue, story - all there. Therefore, I loved this game.
