Fifth case!!!
As expected, the silhouette on the title screen is Blackquill's.
This opening cutscene reminds me somewhat of the original trilogy's cutscenes. Those had a lot of panning over static images with simple animation effects; this one's effects are more cinematic, but the action still mostly comes from panning.
Aww, Phoenix is all alone again.
So Trucy was watching the trial? Isn't she supposed to be in school?
I'm still a little annoyed that you can no longer examine the office. How the hell am I supposed to know what Trucy's thinking about her fake spaghetti now?
"That's just how he is." DAMN IT. HE HAS PTSD. WE KNOW FROM THIS GAME THAT PSYCHOLOGY EXISTS IN THE AA-VERSE, SO WHERE ARE THE THERAPISTS???
"I didn't realize channeling was back in vogue." Waaaait a minute. I thought channeling was on the upswing ever since the first trilogy. What's been going on since then?
Wait a minute, why didn't Blackquill immediately appeal his own conviction as soon as the HAT-2 bombing occurred? What is going on?
"YOU COULDN'T EVEN SMUGGLE A WITHERED OLD LEAF THROUGH THOSE CHECKPOINTS," shouted Cosmos, jabbing Phoenix in the arm with his elbow. "NOT EVEN A LEAF. A LEAF! WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN A LEAF BEFORE? NOT INSIDE THE CENTER, I CAN TELL YOU THAT RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE THE CONTRADICTION THAT WOULD CREATE COULD BLOW THIS WHOLE CASE WIDE OPEN!"
"Prosecutor Blackquill seems more like a ninja than a spy, don't you think?" This just makes me headcanon that Blackquill was recruited to be a member of Kay Faraday's Yatagarasu team. "Young beauties" indeed.
So Athena's mom is wearing a kimono. I thought she might be but then I thought it was too weird with the jacket, but no. I wonder if the localization is going to try to explain that at all.
"'No violence'?! Too bad Apollo didn't get a chance to say that before you attacked him!" You tell him, Phoenix!
Mmmgh. Aura Blackquill disturbs me. Also she seems to be hitting on Apollo? Girl, he is way too young for you.
Ha, it's not just me, the robot agrees! Apollo and Clay do have the same face!
HOLY SHIT. Metis Cykes/Aura Blackquill = canon?
"Their bodies are really just peripherals." They're GAULEMs!
"Dadddy's"? Oh, for god's sake.
"(Does she mean he's usually silly and dorky?)" Hahahahaha!
Aww, Phoenix. All alone.
Mayaaaaa! Aww, Maya. So great. Oh, there's an updated rendering of her! I like it!
PEARRRRRRLLLLLLLLL and they updated her music! I like it! Pearl Pearl Pearl!
Pearl is so pretty!
Aww, Pearl does Maya's hand-clasping sprite, and Maya is totally going to break her shojin ryori diet for burgers!
Oh, I just realized that Pearl is the same age now that Maya was when she and Phoenix first met! Awww. By the way, Pearl must know Trucy pretty well, right? They're about the same age and everything? They must be friends, right? I hope they're friends.
I don't wanna make Phoenix leave Pearl at the office but I think I'm gonna have to.
Why are these Blackquill conversation sprites so fascinating to me?
Ah, I see. "She had a thing for Japanese culture." That's why she...wore a kimono to work and kept a katana in her office. Obviously.
Oh, good, a robot coup. Another thing for Ace Attorney to cross off its bucket list.
JESUS GOD EDGEWORTH
EDGEWORTH
HOLY FUCK HOW CAN YOU HAVE GOTTEN HOTTER HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE ARE YOU A WIZARD
UM YES WE HAVE MORE PRESSING ISSUES TO DISCUSS. LIKE. WHAT IS UP WITH YOUR GLASSES, THEY MAKE YOU LOOK SO DIGNIFIED
God, Edgeworth's theme sounds amazing.
Oh man, I wonder if Edgeworth's been thinking about how it's been almost 25 years exactly since DL-6. Probably. I bet Phoenix has been wondering if he should say something, but he knows Edgeworth will never want to talk about it, but he still wants to let Edgeworth know that he's thinking of him and aaaaagh brb writing world's sappiest fanfic
Okay, first order of business: present attorney's badge to Edgeworth. OH MAN THAT WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE. SO WORTH IT. What does Phoenix mean, "all I put you through"? What exactly did Edgeworth do for him? Or maybe it means that Phoenix called him crying every night. That's totally what happened, isn't it. Aaaaaagh brb writing world's most melodramatic h/c fanfic
Dude! I'll have to check the dates on this, but if Edgeworth's been chief prosecutor for almost a year, maybe he's the one who put Phoenix on the jurist system simulation! That would explain so much!
Edgeworth calls Pearl "Pearls" just like Phoenix does; he's totally been spending tons of time with Phoenix, studying1 the legal systems2 in Europe3.
"(He may be a stickler for the rule of law, but I have no better ally in this world than him.)" *swoooooon*
"Wright... Please stop presenting random evidence just to see how that person will react." HAHAHA! So meta. Oh god, the rest of that dialogue is just as amazing.
This robot assembly device animation is so hypnotic.
Wait, so the machine is just going to keep running? Aren't they just going to create an entirely new army of robots under Aura's control? Is this a good idea?
Oh, Aura. This is actually really sad.
Oh, wait, I just realized that Clonco recognized Apollo as Clay by his jacket and didn't think anything of it because Apollo's face probably hadn't been registered as well. I still like my theory that Apollo and Clay have identical features better.
Waaaaait, wait, wait, stop. Stop. No. Phoenix's disbarment and Blackquill's conviction were what ushered in the "dark age of the law"? Those cases? Did anybody even give a shit about MANFRED VON KARMA??? Even leaving aside the murder he committed, wasn't it an open secret that he'd been fabricating evidence for years? Weren't there whispers about Edgeworth from the day he became a prosecutor? Hello? Is this thing on???
"That must've taken a lot of courage, to face your past like that..." Aw, Pearl. I wonder how she's doing these days, whether she's worked through the stuff her mother did and so on.
The ruined courtroom is so dramatic and ridiculous and over the top. It is perfect for Ace Attorney.
I just realized: Edgeworth looks a LOT like his father now. Aw.
Haha, this cutscene. The judge is all, "GET A ROOM, GUYS."
"(This immense tension between us... It's like we're picking up right where we left off.)" Okay, now they're doing it on purpose.
"And that's Ms. Blackquill's theory! It totally goes in the face of the official ruling, huh!" Fulbright cracks me up.
"Now I know what they mean when they say 'close enough to argue'!" Ah! He ships Phoenix and Edgeworth too! God, they are barely even bothering to hide it anymore.
Edgeworth goes to Trucy's magic shows!
"Edgeworth chose to interpret 'hugged' as 'stabbed'..." Typical Edgeworth, totally averse to any intimacy whatsoever.
Ah, yes. "Selfish." That's the word I would use to describe Blackquill right at this moment.
"Don't lecture ME on matters of the heart, Edgeworth!" Man, you know what, I'm just going to stop listing these, lest this liveblog become The Story of Phoenix and Edgeworth's Big Gay Love. More than it already is.
Okay, so here's something. The black Psyche-Locks. Kristoph Gavin had them too, and he also had five of them, which would suggest that his secret was on the level of whatever Athena's is. Obviously I don't know what Athena's deal is yet, but I don't think I know what Kristoph's was, either...? Kristoph plotted to destroy a bunch of lives, but he knew he was doing that. Maybe it had something to do with why he was doing it, like he wasn't able to admit to himself that his inability to get over being fired by Zak Gramarye had everything to do with him and nothing to do with Zak or Phoenix?
Phoenix and Edgeworth are now arguing over who has the better eye for aesthetics. I think we're approaching gay critical mass.
Oh! Brainwave time! I like brainwave time.
Oh, Athena. :(
Hmm, okay. Let's think about who the person in the mask could have been.
-Aura Blackquill? She would know how to manipulate Ponco's impressions of the scene, but she really seems to have been upset about the murder, plus Athena seems sure it was a man.
-Simon Blackquill? Nah.
-Yuri Cosmos? Hmm, maybe. But he's seemed suspicious from the start, so I don't know.
-Solomon Starbuck? Maybe, but he hasn't had much to do with this case, so it would be narratively strange.
-Clay Terran? I really don't think they'll go there.
-Bobby Fulbright? Look, I know we don't have any reason to believe he was around at the time (although he would have been 26, so not too young to work at or with the center), but the dude has peaked lapels. Plus, it would be very dramatically ironic.
-Hugh O'Conner? He hasn't shown up at all in this case, but I was reading through my previous liveblogs and noticed that he had taken a "seven-year break" from high school, and we never found out what that was all about.
Okay, judging by that security camera video, it's definitely not Cosmos. It actually sort of looks like a male version of Aura, which makes me wonder if Aura is actually a man disguised as a woman. (I could also wax theoretical on gender identity, but c'mon, this is Ace Attorney.) That would have been one hell of a long con, but it would a) support my same-gender siblings theory; b) be a nice bit of misdirection; and *sigh* c) remove the lesbian overtones to Metis and Aura's relationship.
"Shut up, Simon! You know exactly how I felt about her! Her respect as a co-worker wasn't all that I wanted!" I am going to be so sad when Aura turns out to have been a guy all along.
Oh, Blackquill's going to be exonerated! Wow!
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Apollo? Um. Apollo, you're being weird. Am I going to have to add you to my list of suspects?
I'm surprised to realize that I've never thought about what would happen if Phoenix and Apollo's supernatural abilities were to be pitted against each other. Especially since I've been thinking throughout the game about how similar and yet different they are, how each has its pros and cons...this is pretty cool, is what I'm saying.
Aww! Everybody!
"Stop bringing up good points, Edgeworth..." lulz
"Why do you always have to point out every flaw?!?!?!" Whoa, wait, are we talking about the trial anymore? Save it until you get home, guys.
Wait a minute, from this picture of the outside of the space center it looks like the distance from the launch pads to the main building is greater than the height of the corridors from the ground. Is this thing to scale? Do the corridors not retract all the way?
HOLY SHIT.
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, I FUCKING CALLED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEHOLD THE POWER OF THE RHETORIC OF COSTUME DESIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"We were all taken in by his fake persona." SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, PHOENIX!
ALLOW ME TO QUOTE MYSELF:
"Fulbright has peaked lapels, 3:2 odds he's guilty." THIS IS FROM HIS FIRST APPEARANCE
"Man, I sure hope Fulbright is the bad guy, because the alternative is that he's going to be plaguing me for the rest of the game." MAYBE NOT SO ALTERNATIVE AFTER ALL
MAYBE I'M GLAD IT WASN'T EMA OR GUMSHOE AFTER ALL.
Oh god, Apollo and Athena. Yep, if I weren't shipping them already, I'd be starting to now.
Haha, Aura. How can I continue to be unsettled by someone who says things like "And it's all thanks to me and my robots. You'd better be grateful"?
"(I guess love can take on a variety of expressions, including stunted in their case...)" Phoenix is the fucking best. As are the Blackquills.
"And I will relish slashing that blackguard Fulbright to shreds without mercy." I, too, will relish slashing Fulbright without mercy.
Did believing in Athena heal Apollo's arms, too?
"Tell me the phantom didn't just make me set up a stupid pun for him." Truly he is devious in all manner of ways.
Yay, one last Perceive! I was sure the tell was going to be his right hand, which Athena stabbed when he killed her mother, thereby forcing him to wear gloves all the time, but I guess that'll come later.
Nice try with the undercover business, Fulbright, but you're the only guy with unconvincing emotions and peaked lapels we've got, sooo.
Ha, is Apollo just going to stand there staring at Athena with that annoyed look on his face for the rest of the trial?
Watching the Mood Matrix detect no emotion from Fulbright whatsoever is surprisingly creepy.
Phoenix is interested in getting his hands on some spy gadgets! Now there's a video game I would play the shit out of.
Athena and Blackquill are partners in truth-finding! Aww!
Phoenix and Blackquill are going to banish the dark age of the law together!! Aww!!
Daaaamn! I wanna see a Fulbright/Blackquill cage match! Spy vs. Samurai!
Hey, when did Athena and Apollo switch places?
WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK
I
BUT
WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK
Okay, he better take that Means mask off soon so I don't have to look at that creepy statue face anymore.
Phoenix, just go ahead and say "fuck". This game is already rated M.
Okay, the Phoenix face is one I can live with.
"I thought that the worst of times are when lawyers have to force their biggest smiles." Daaaaaamn.
"I wonder if you'll be able to force your biggest smile when you see what I've got." Swish! Damn, real Phoenix!
Nice speech, Apollo. Gold star for you.
Loooooooove this triple-pointing tableau. So good.
Oh. Oh wow. Oh my goodness.
Wow.
Aww, Blackquill's smiling at the verdict! So sweet. I love his relationship with Athena.
GOD THIS ENTIRE CONVERSATION BETWEEN PHOENIX AND EDGEWORTH oh man I can't deal. "Ah, the complicated love-hate relationship between life-long rivals!" You said it, Athena! Except I don't think there's really all that much hate there.
Aww, happytears Athena!
Roll credits! Trucy is finding Apollo odd jobs to do! Juniper is planning to grow hot-as-the-sun red peppers geez Juniper. Payne is under investigation! Mayor Tenma is going to wrestle Apollo!! Filch is an alderman? Robin's going to be a prosecutor after all, and I think she and Phoenix should form some kind of law/art social club! Hugh is going back to school, I guess! Myriam is trying to make everyone wear boxes! Mmmm, Klavier. Oh, Klavier would like to have a jam session with Juniper, huh? *eyebrow waggle* Pearl is going to clean up the attitudes around the Wright Anything Agency! Maya is going to come back?!?! There had better be another game soon if that's the case!!! Cosmos is no longer the director of the space center! Ponco is going into space and doesn't seem to understand what happened to Metis! Clonco...has some issues! Starbuck is going to the moon! I hope he's doing better oh crap maybe not. Blackquill came to the office, oh my goodness! He seems to be foreshadowing a future case - something about someone's father needing an attorney! Edgeworth owes Phoenix but will repay him one day. Or maybe one night, amirite?
Man, these credits are long. Guess that's what happens when you raise your production values by this much. Nice pictures though.
Aww, this end cutscene! So cheesy, and yet so amazingly sweet. How does Ace Attorney do that???
