FMA chapter 93
Mar. 11th, 2009 08:47 pmA definite improvement over the last couple chapters. Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious that the story's winding down.
I mentioned to
evilhippo that Roy seemed to be genre savvy in this chapter, to which she responded with the delightful turn of phrase "It's kind of like, when he's not on the page, he's reading them." I would like to subscribe to this newsletter, with one caveat: rather than reading the manga himself, I like to think he makes Hawkeye read it to him. "What's happening now, Lieutenant?" "Well, Yoki is telling Dr. Marcoh to hide, instead of exposing himself to Pride and risking being taken as a hostage." "I see, I see. Very interesting. What does Marcoh say to that?" "Rgh." "Ah, yes, of course."
I frankly can not believe Kimblee is still alive. He has been cheating death for dozens of chapters now. I'm pretty sure the only reason he ever actually got his hands on Philosopher's Stone in the first place is to give him an in-story reason not to die, because otherwise the only reason he isn't dead that I can come up with is that Arakawa wished it so.
"How dare you be so rude to the man who just saved your life!" SERIOUSLY, dude. There is a time and a place for ragging on your little brother (many times and many places, really), but this was not it.
I will never get tired of the naked zombie cyclops army. It's just so beautifully insane. I guess you can do that when your wildly successful manga is approaching its end.
"Shoot us, and those things will eat you alive! Or help us and start shooting those things!" I really have no idea why she needs to explain this. That grunt is clearly dumber than a box of hammers.
I LOVE the way Ed is flying through the air on page 29. A main character that can be so seamlessly comedic and dramatic is such a rare jewel. Also, Roy's pose here perfectly sets the mood for the over-the-top way he acts for the rest of the chapter.
I sort of heart Roy and Hawkeye's banter on page 31. T-minus five chapters to making out. Except, stop being such a dick, Roy. She really thought you were dead, and you just about were. (I know, I know, take the dick out of the Roy and you've got, like, a pile of hair on the floor.)
Hawkeye is so great this chapter. She doesn't have many lines, but the ones she does have are golden. "[Bullets] don't work on anything these days"? Hee! She and Roy are both genre savvy, apparently. Well, I guess it's no surprise, since she's the one who's been reading the manga to him.
See, the way everybody's all showing up in the same place and facing off against Envy is what I feel is the biggest giveaway that the story is winding down.
You know, if I'd known that Envy's transformation into Gracia was going to be set up as this big reveal, I would have read chapter 15 differently way back when. I guess I can still do that if and when I go back and reread the whole series.
I'm guessing Hawkeye's facial expression on page 43 is supposed to be grief about Hughes, but I like to think it's partly her bracing herself for what she knows (really, what all of us know) Roy is about to do. He seems to confirm our suspicions on page 44. I can't wait. I like to think there will be upbeat carnival music playing in the background during the fallout.
