I'm watching Heroes!
Jun. 30th, 2008 12:32 amI haven't done one of these in years.
Q. Diana! I hear you've been watching Heroes.
A. Yes!
Q. This is a new development.
A. I haven't watched any network TV other than Law & Order since high school.
Q. So how are you liking it?
A. The first episode was pretty bad, even for a first episode, but it went straight uphill from there.
A. ...And I know there's something you're just dying to ask, so just go ahead and get it out.
Q. ...OMG WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HIRO IS HE NOT THE CUTEST THING EVER
A. He is completely adorable! I don't think he could possibly get any more so, and if he did, I think my head would explode!
Q. I KNOW, RIGHT? HIRO HIRO HIRO HIRO HIRO
A. Yep, Hiro is great.
Q. HIRO HIRO HIRO HIRO HIRO HIRO HIRO
A. Okay, so anyway, there were other things I wanted to say about Heroes. ...That don't involve Hiro.
Q. FINE. So why did you just get into it now? Did it not interest you before?
A. As a matter of fact, I thought from the beginning that it sounded very interesting, and pretty much every single thing I've heard about it since has been positive, except for the stuff about Sylar fangirls, who it turns out are not part of the show.
Q. Oh. Well, did you not have time before?
A. Well, actually, not really; during the first season, I was both working and going to school full-time, and I don't remember whether I had Mondays off, and then of course this past season I suppose I had time, but by then there was already a developed plot and I'm basically allergic to downloading hour-long shows, especially ones I'm not already invested in, and I'm not going to buy a DVD boxset of something I've never even seen, and so on.
Q. But you did have time!
A. Yes, but like I said, access to the first season was what was standing in my way. I like to start from the beginning, whenever possible.
Q. Okay, so what was it that made you finally get off your ass and--wait. How did you end up getting hold of the first season?
A. I rented the first two DVDs, watched the first two episodes that evening and the third episode the next afternoon, and then I took them back to Blockbuster and went to Target to buy the first season boxset. And then I spent the weekend marathoning.
Q. Wait a minute, back up! First, why didn't you bother to watch the rest of the second DVD before you bought the whole season, and second, have you ever rented a movie in your life?
A. Yeah, this was the first time I've used my Blockbuster card since I got it two years ago. And I didn't watch the rest of the DVD because I didn't need to. I had pretty much made up my mind to buy it unless I absolutely hated it, and by the end of the third episode I was catching myself yelling at the characters, so...yeah.
Q. Back to my earlier question, then. When all the personal interest, critical acclaim, fandom love, and RL friends who are into it weren't enough, why did you finally get off your ass and watch those first couple episodes?
A. Because. Um.
Q. Because...?
A. This is kind of embarrassing.
Q. Don't worry; this is Livejournal. Your secret is safe.
A. Because a complete stranger on the internet mentioned in passing that one of the characters reminded her of another character from a canon that I was familiar with, okay?
Q. You spent over fifty dollars, and fully intend to spend more, just for brief, intermittent reminders of a fictional character from an entirely separate series, whose canon you probably already own and could look at whenever you want.
Q. ...Can I ask? Oh, wait, can I guess?
A. Go ahead. If you're familiar at all with both Heroes and my journal, you can probably figure it out.
Q. IS IT SYLAR AND LIGHT I BET IT IS
A. You fail. No, it's not a Death Note character.
Q. Is it Jessica? She's like an evil Hawkeye.
A. She is not like an evil Hawkeye! I don't even want Hawkeye to be evil! Just no!
Q. Okay, well, if it's not Death Note, and it's not FMA, maybe it could be Harry Potter, or maybe...it...oh God. I know who it is. I know. But it's just so...so right.
A. Perhaps a helpful pictorial guide will help illustrate the image that this Internet Stranger planted in my mind.
=
Q. It's like they're the same person.
A. Yeah, about that, when I told the Internet Stranger what I thought of her comparison ("Nothing has ever made me want to start watching Heroes as much as your comment just did"), this is what I got back.

Q. That is oddly attractive.
A. Attractive, yes. Odd, no....well, maybe a little odd.
Q. Does this mean you would consider shipping them?
A. You know, I had not thought about it until just now! Perhaps I could. OH OH OH you know how Parkman totally starts out on the LAPD? Remember where Phoenix Wright takes place? :D :D :D
Q. This could be the beginning of something beautiful. But anyway, moving things along. You said you were marathoning?
A. Two episodes on Thursday, eight on Friday, fifteen on Saturday, and nine on Sunday.
It has been an otherwise unproductive weekend.
