Death Note 106
Apr. 19th, 2006 03:54 pmSo. Uh.
Sorry about that. I'm running out of creative ways to express shock. Damn you, Death Note and FMA, for being so good lately! Anyway, I see Light might be dead. How about that. At first I thought it was Mikami who shot him, because that would make sense at this point, but survey says it was Matsuda, and anyway Mikami couldn't have done it because he's in handcuffs, duh. I guess the reason I didn't think it was Matsuda was because he has NEVER BEFORE MADE THAT FACE IN CANON EVER, so he didn't even look like himself, plus, WHAT?
As I said in the comments to the post with the spoiler pics, this kind of makes me wonder whether the decision to have Matsuda be the one who kills Light was a recent one, or whether it's been planned from the beginning. Because in Fruits Basket, for example, certain things in recent chapters have happened that were clearly foreshadowed or otherwise hinted at in chapter 1. This didn't really have any foreshadowing that I can recall. HOWEVER, I just had a thought as I was writing those last couple sentences--so, okay, in Death Note chapter 1 or thereabouts, Ryuk tells Light that he, Ryuk, is going to be the one to kill him. Or, well, he suggests it as a strong possibility. So I thought, wait a minute, wasn't Ryuk supposed to do that? And then I thought, WAIT A MINUTE, it totally was him. He must have written Light's name in his own death note, and then controlled Matsuda to go insane and shoot him! It fits completely!
...Okay.
Okay. Okay okay okay. So here's what I think happened: Ryuk wrote Light's name in his death note. After that, he wrote the details--something along the lines of "confesses as Kira in front of everybody involved in the investigation and is shot blah blah blah something." And then he giggled uncontrollably.
Now, this would also require Matsuda's name to have been written down. I know the death note can't be used to have one person kill another person, but we know that it can be used to have one person's death caused by another, as with the guy on the bus with Light and Raye Pember, who was later run over by the bus. But, wait, then would Matsuda's name really have to be written down? The bus driver didn't die. I guess this isn't a completely developed theory.
Still! If what just happened could have been caused by a death note, I am absolutely convinced that it was. I mean, think of how great these last ten chapters or so have been. Now think of how great it would be to BE RYUK RIGHT NOW. He is currently having the Best Time Ever. The other shinigami thought he was pathetic for doing what he did, and it's always possible that they're right, but the payoff was entertainment of the absolute highest quality. This would also explain Matsuda's seemingly out-of-character behavior, which can otherwise be attributed only to either temporary insanity or some kind of revenge for Sayu, who I believe is still catatonic. Matsuda has, after all, risked his life for Sayu in the past, and while I think it's kind of silly, because they aren't even in an actual relationship, it set a bit of a precedent for something like this to happen. But...it still feels like a bit of a stretch. I don't know.
Okay, this post has gone on long enough. I need to let it settle for a bit. Possibly there will be more to come.
ETA: Sorry to anyone who clicked on the cut and saw all that GIANT FONT. I checked it when I posted and it looked fine; I don't know why. It's fixed now.
