The Hunt
So a friend of mine bought a DS a couple months ago. Of course, my first game recommendation was Phoenix Wright. She said, "what games should I get?" and I said, "PHOENIX WRIGHT PHOENIX WRIGHT PHOENIX WRIGHT!" This is verbatim. I would have loaned her my copy, but
weltreisender is borrowing it, so finally I decided I would get her a copy for her birthday.
Oh my god, you guys. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find Phoenix Wright these days? Do you? I'll tell you. REALLY FUCKING HARD. Thinking about it now, I don't think I've seen a copy for sale since 2007. I bid for it on eBay, I got outbid. Tomorrow's when we're celebrating my friend's birthday, so I finally asked about it at the West St. Paul Gamestop today. The guy was not surprised to find that they didn't have one, but he said the Midway Gamestop in St. Paul did, and called them to save it for me. So I drove to St. Paul, where they tried to sell me Apollo Justice. They also happened to have a copy of Justice For All, but of course I'm not about to let somebody start off with anything but the first game, so they looked it up again and gave me the phone numbers of two other Gamestops in the Twin Cities. I called the Woodbury Gamestop, asked the girl who answered whether they had it, she looked it up. When she said they had it, she sounded like I had told her there was a gold mine under her feet. Then I asked her to make sure it was the right game. She checked and told me it was not. I thanked her and called the other store, and then repeated my request. When the guy I talked to there looked it up, he told me they had it as though he had just been informed that he was holding the winning lottery ticket. "Shut. UP!" were his exact words. I asked him to make sure it was the right game. "I am holding it! Right here in my hands!" he said. So I drove over to Richfield (!) and bought it. The guy I had talked to on the phone wished me well with my awesome new game, and I told him that I was actually getting it for a friend, and that I hoped she would like it, but if not, I'd tell her she could sell it on eBay for more than I had paid for it. He agreed with me. Then I left and got horribly lost in Minneapolis for about half an hour.
It was totally worth it, though. If she likes it, everybody wins. If she doesn't, she gets to make money on eBay with it, and at least I have no regrets. I mean, seriously, I don't think I could live with myself if I had a friend with a DS who hadn't even gotten to try playing Phoenix Wright.
