Right-o!

Sorry for the flist spam. I had two things to say in a row; what were the odds? :(

The minute I saw this in Fandom Wank, I wanted to get in on it, but I knew I would just end up sharing my thoughts on the matter without being funny, thereby missing the point of Fandom Wank. I'm still really glad [livejournal.com profile] canon_goddess posted it though, because now I have an excuse to share said thoughts on said matter, of which I have many, right here in the appropriate venue of my personal journal!

-For the record: it actually doesn't matter to me whether other people use Raito or Light. I prefer and use Light myself, but no matter how dumb someone else's reasons for using Raito might be, just using the name is not that big a deal. I can actually read either one without being jarred or having to remind myself who is being referred to. In fact, I consider "I got used to Raito when I was reading the scanlations and can't think of him as anything else" and "I just do" to be (pretty much the only) not-dumb reasons to prefer Raito, so individuals' preferences do not really affect me all that much. But at the same time, I've got my own preferences, and my reasons for them.

-If we're going by the manga's internal logic, "Light" was obviously the name his parents had in mind, as indicated by their choice of kanji. If we're going by creator logic, "Raito" the made-up Japanese word was obviously not the name Ohba had in mind, as indicated by the use of katakana in the furigana.

-I always thought the point of Light's name starting with L was a symbolic thing. Like, he could go by L, so he could be L, you know? I don't think it's coincidence that Ryuzaki's nickname could be romanized (but likely isn't because it actually is apparently Japanese in origin, and traditionally the Japanese R/L sound is transliterated as R) so that his own initial is L. The matching initials highlight their status as equals, and so on. And no, Ryuzaki/Raito doesn't work, because there is no question that L is the important letter here.

-The HunterXHunter example in the FW comments, while amusing, is a straw man. Those romanizations are just silly. Also, I would like to state for the record that I personally am not among those who doesn't know how good we have it. Oh my God, I love this fandom. Sure, there are idiots and wankers, but overall everyone's calm, civil, and easygoing. And they write well.

-Yes, Light was brought to us by the same person who brought us Quillsh Wammy. You will notice that in the fandom, we refer to him as Quillsh Wammy. Assuming from the scanlation that his name was spoken in katakana, surely there are alternate ways of romanizing whatever that spelling was, and maybe one of them even resembles a real name. Furthermore, bringing up the names "Backyard Bottomslash," "Quarter Queen," and "Beyond Birthday," despite being a worthwhile contribution to pretty much any discussion ever, does not actually prove anything here, as Ohba was not necessarily the one who came up with those names. Ohba did come up with Xergeey Poyy, though, which I'm sure is good evidence for some point I might be trying to make somewhere in this post, but at the moment I got nothing. I just wanted an excuse to type "Xergeey Poyy" again.

-Although it's totally irrelevant to the debate, the ffr thread where the one person argued that they couldn't see Souichiro and Sachiko Yagami giving their son a weird name makes no sense at all. It doesn't matter whether you think they might, because obviously they did. And how do you know what they would do, anyway? Maybe Sayu's got a normal name because they got a lot of shit for giving their first kid an unusual name, or because one parent named one child and the other named the other, (or someone else entirely suggested Light) or any of several other possible reasons. The names don't have to match, people. Two of my good friends when I was little were twins named Shakira and Kellie. It's okay, really.

-Finally, now I'm just getting wanky and humorless, but you know what? This thread? No, you shut up. This is FANFICRANTS. Telling the OP of a post in a fandom-based rant community to shut up because they disagree with you on a fandom-related matter is grounds for having your opinion invalidated entirely, IMO. Too bad, because the first part of that comment looked like it might have had an actual point.

-I just...I can't believe the FW post just went ahead and brought over the wank from the ffr post starting from the FIRST COMMENT. Go back to lurkerland, paintobscura, and pick up some perspective while you're out.

-Okay, that's all I really feel able to say tonight, because damn I need to go to sleep. But there's one more thing I want to mention before I do. The moon was absolutely gorgeous tonight. It was big and full and low and beautifully illuminated. I was going to take a picture of it, but I was driving when I noticed it, and then when I got home I couldn't find it. That's right, I lost the moon in the sky. Stupid tree-filled apartment complex.
